Risks of reprocessing reusable endoscope valves

Reusable endoscope valves are hygienically critical, as they can not be properly reprocessed and dried due to their design. In the HYGENDA 2013* study, initiated by the German DEGEA (Society for endoscopy nurses), reprocessed endoscope valves of 23 participating institutions were microbiologically tested.

In 26 of 30 cases air/water and suction valves were microbiologically contaminated. Skin microbes, spore forming organisms, moulds, wet microbes and E. coli have been isolated.

Cleaning Drying Storage
Difficult to access openings and inner channels. Valves inner channels cannot be dried well. The storage of several valves in one container favours cross-contamination.
No validated procedure for cleaning. Water residues remain in the valves, in which wet microbes can multiply. Risk of recontamination.
